E.G.N.Y.A. is a special charity that provides care and support to people with intellectual disabilities.
E.G.N.Y.A. is an N.P.I.D. specially recognized as a Charitable Association and a certified Non-Profit Social Care Service Provider. It is supervised by the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family and the Regional Unit of Eastern Attica. It is governed by a five-member elected Board of Directors, consisting of our members, parents and advocates.
It was founded in 1973, when a group of parents with a common vision came together to form the Association of Parents of Mentally Retarded People. The common goal of the parents was to create a Home for their children when they themselves would no longer be able to support them. Their vision was to ensure quality living for their children in a warm environment similar to that of a family. The creation of a HOME where people with intellectual disabilities could live as equal and active members of society, receiving appropriate support for their development and empowerment.
In 1973 the E.G.N.Y.A. founded the "CENTER FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION" in Kifissia for the care, education and employment of people with mental disabilities.
In 1980, he inaugurated the "HOME FOR SPECIAL THERAPEUTIC EDUCATION" in Nea Erythraea, where the above activities were transferred, but mainly he operated the first boarding house for people with mental disabilities in Attica.
In 1986 the E.G.N.Y.A. founded the SOCIAL CARE CENTRE for people with mental disabilities "THE STEGI" in Kiteza, Lagonisi, Attica, on an area of 25 acres and began construction with funding of 55% from the EEC and 45% from the State. The project was completed in 1995.
In 1998, the "STAGE OF SPECIAL THERAPEUTIC EDUCATION" was relocated to this Centre. In the "STEGI", the E.G.N.Y.A. provides care, employs in various workshops, houses and cares for the psychosomatic health of people with mental disabilities and supports their families.
The aim of E.G.N.Y.A. is the empowerment of the persons served, so that they live with quality of life and participate in every aspect of life as active members of society. Acceptance, respect and development of the personality of individuals are basic principles of E.G.N.Y.A.
"SHELTER OF THE E.G.N.Y.A."
